(KRON) — A San Mateo man who allegedly stole and crashed his roommate’s car has been arrested and charged with hit and run with property damage and vehicle theft. According to the San Mateo Police Department, officers were dispatched just before 2 p.m. Sunday to the 100 block of 16th Avenue in San Mateo on a report of a crash.
At the scene, officers found a gray Ford Explorer that had crashed into an unoccupied parked catering trailer. Officers learned that the Ford had sideswiped another unoccupied vehicle before crashing into the trailer.
The crash into the trailer, police said, caused damage to its attached vehicle which caused rearend damage to another unoccupied parked vehicle. The driver of the Ford had fled the scene before police arrived.
Officers were directed by witnesses to an apartment complex on the 1400 block of South B Street where they ultimately established a perimeter. The suspect was not located, but they did locate a roommate who told them the Ford belonged to her and the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Miguel Garcia of San Mateo, had taken it without her permission.
