Today, County Supervisor and Secretary of State candidate Don Wagner challenged California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to speak out against Governor Gavin Newsom’s mid-decade redistricting scheme.
In 2010 California voters overwhelmingly adopted Proposition 20 to remove partisan politicians from the congressional redistricting process, turning redistricting over to the independent citizen’s commission. Voters passed Prop. 20 by a margin of 61.2 to 38.8 percent.
“Sitting silently on the sidelines while the politician who appointed you to your job attempts to undermine the will of the voters is not leadership, its collusion,” said Wagner. “Californians demand better from their top elections official.
“Weber should be shouting from the rooftops, warning Californians that Newsom is trying to give their power away to his politicians. He wants to undermine the vote of the people for purely partisan purposes.”
