Stepping inside Baker’s Pride is like stepping into a time machine. Tucked into a shopping center on Savannah’s DeRenne Avenue, alongside fellow stalwarts like Curry Dry Cleaners and Sunny Side Up breakfast restaurant, Baker’s Pride first opened in 1982. In the four decades since, not much has changed—from the handmade cakes, donuts, and sweets in the glass display case to the people beyond the counter.
The bakery’s name refers to the matriarch behind it, JoElla Baker, as much as her profession. Today, Baker’s daughter, Trisha Lang, continues the operations alongside her husband, Al, and her sister, April Brucklier. “I know it’s kind of crazy that it worked out great like that,” Trisha says with a laugh.
There is one specific treat, however, that in-the-know Savannahians and visitors alike flock to Baker’s Pride for: the Chocolate Chewie cookie. “We sell way more Chocolate Chewies than chocolate chip, another crowd-pleaser,” Trisha notes…
