Plans to transform Nix Medical Center into apartments taking next step

The long-empty Nix Medical Center building — once an icon of modern medicine towering over the River Walk — is one step closer to its next chapter as downtown apartments.

A proposal to begin converting the 24-story gothic-style property at 414 Navarro St. will go before the Historic and Design Review Commission on Wednesday, a sign that plans for the redevelopment are gaining momentum.
