Augusta commissioners tell apartment owners to cleanup their act

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Bon Air and Richmond Summit share the same owners, Redwood Housing and they told the commission they are spending big money to upgrade security and living conditions. Augusta Commissioners are saying it better happen.“This has got to stop if we allow this, we have to allow every other place in Augusta and we can’t – we want to be a better place,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith Rice.Commissioners are putting off any action against Redwood’s business licenses until the December to see if the improvements take place.Commissioners are also waiting on owners of the Maxwell House to address complaints of  unsanitary living conditions.“I believe it is doable. We’ve already made some great strides at least in the last few weeks and the last few years to make the property where it’s a place that everyone would want to live,” said Maxwell House Vice President Hugh Jacobs. But Commissioner Jordan Johnson said Maxwell House needs more inspections and address issues of the smell and rodents.“Smell and rats seemed to be the big issues.”

“I can understand that which is why we reached out to a national firm who has the wherewithal to help us get that under control,” said Jacobs. For Maxwell House, commissioners called for an agreement with the owners that would replace carpet and regular updates on the rodent control, but commissioners understand that does not help in the short term.“These folks are dealing with real conditions right now, and it’s hard for me being flesh and blood just like you to hear what some of residents are going through,” said Commissioner Don Clark.City leaders sent a message to the properties to clean up their act, and now they’ll wait to see what happens…
