Queens landlord sued for overcharging rent-stabilized tenants: AG

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A Queens landlord is being accused of “repeatedly” breaking rent stabilization laws by overcharging rent-stabilized tenants in multiple neighborhoods.

Attorney General Letitia James and New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas filed a lawsuit against Zara Reality on Wednesday.

“While hardworking families are battling an affordable housing crisis and fighting to make ends meet, Zara Realty shamelessly took advantage of vulnerable tenants,” Attorney General James said.

The lawsuit claims Zara Realty was illegally overcharging tenants in Jamaica and Elmhurst who paid their rent through the Department of Social Services housing subsidy programs, “brazenly” ignoring rent reduction orders by the HCR’s rent administration office since 2022…
