Texas DPS offers driving reminders ahead of new school year

LUBBOCK, Texas — The new school year is nearly here and with that comes the return of drop-off lines and busy school zones. Sgt. Adrian Briseno with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the key to keeping school zones safe for kids and for drivers starts with drivers being alert.

“Let’s eliminate the distractions…these kids are either riding their bike or walking and they’re not paying attention, so you have to be the one…to pay attention to that,” Sgt. Briseno said.

Last year, TxDOT reported for the state of Texas nearly 800 traffic crashes in school zones which also resulted in two deaths. Sgt. Briseno said the most common type of crash cause is distracted drivers. He said that checking social media or responding to text messages can wait until you are out of the school zone and off the roadways.

He says people who live near school zones know when to slow down, but with some areas including school zones under heavy construction this can make traveling more difficult. There is one simple solution to this problem…
