WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Stephen Jacob Rogers has been charged with the murder of his mother-in-law, 49-year-old Sharmaine Burke.
Burke was found shot on Wednesday, July 30, at the Longbranch Mobile Home Community in southeast Sedgwick County.
At a first court appearance on Tuesday, Rogers was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated endangering a child, and criminal threat. His bond was set at $2 million, and he is due back in court on Aug. 18.
Deputies responded after a 911 call came from Burke, who reported that her son-in-law, Rogers, was intoxicated and threatening to shoot her. She stayed on the line, describing the situation and informing dispatchers that her 8-year-old grandson was also present.

The sheriff’s office arrived and found Burke dead from gunshots. They tracked the Roger’s vehicle leaving Augusta, and the boy was safely recovered. According to the family, the boy is now living with his grandfather. A GoFundMe was set up by a cousin of Burke…
