UNC Asheville faces backlash over $250M stadium plan threatening campus woods

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — In the heart of UNC Asheville’s South Campus woods, 45 acres of forest are now at the center of one of the region’s most controversial development debates.

The university’s push to lease the land for a $250 million stadium-anchored district has sparked public outcry, questions of transparency, and concern about long-term environmental and educational impacts.

The plan, as approved by the UNC System Board of Governors in July, allows the UNCA Endowment Fund to begin negotiations with a private developer for a 99-year lease to build market-rate housing, a childcare center, retail space, and a 5,000-seat stadium. The facility would host Asheville City Soccer Club and UNC Asheville’s Division I soccer program.
