Tragedy on Lake Alexander: Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Claims Young Girl’s Life

Lincoln County, WI – An 11-year-old girl tragically lost her life after falling from a boat on Lake Alexander on July 27th. An autopsy has revealed that carbon monoxide poisoning contributed to the incident.

Maisy Livingston was positioned near the boat’s engine when she was overcome by the odorless, colorless gas, leading to a sudden loss of consciousness and her fall overboard. Her body was recovered approximately four hours later.

Three other individuals on board were also treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and are currently in stable condition.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the findings and is urging boaters to be vigilant about the dangers of carbon monoxide, even in open-air vessels. The “station wagon effect,” as this phenomenon is sometimes called, can occur when exhaust fumes accumulate around the boat, particularly at slow speeds or while idling. This can create dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, even without an enclosed cabin.

The sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of being aware of wind conditions and ensuring proper ventilation on boats. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, it can lead to loss of consciousness and death.

Maisy Livingston’s family remembers her for her fun-loving spirit and the joy she brought to everyone who knew her. They are devastated by this sudden and tragic loss. Authorities have stated there is no suspicion of foul play or negligence.

The Sheriff’s office stressed that while carbon monoxide poisoning on boats is not common, it’s a serious danger. They highlighted the risks associated with idling engines, certain wind conditions, and the accumulation of exhaust fumes near swim decks and other areas. They advise boaters to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and to take precautions to ensure proper ventilation at all times.
