National Association of Black Bookstores Announces Official Launch

The first-of-its-kind collective was created to uplift Black bookstore owners and booksellers across the United States

A new organization dedicated to uplifting Black-owned bookstores has been founded.

The National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB2) officially launched on Aug. 6. The non-profit, member-based organization is the first and only collective centered on uplifting Black-owned bookstores and booksellers, per a statement shared with PEOPLE.NAB2 was created to “promote literacy, amplify Black voices and preserve Black culture by increasing the visibility, sustainability and impact of Black bookstores and booksellers.” The organization’s founding directors are comprised of some of the United States’ historic bookstores, including Marshall’s Music and Book Store in Jackson, Miss., Marcus Books in Oakland, Calif., Hakim’s Bookstore in Philadelphia and Source Booksellers in Detroit.

In addition to its board of directors, NAB2 will feature a full advisory board and general membership body. The collective will meet virtually and in-person throughout the year, including during New York’s Black Lit Weekend in August and the Sacramento Black Book Fair in September.
