Austin app helps homeless find resources in real time

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The city of Austin has launched a new mobile app aimed at connecting people experiencing homelessness with vital services in real time.

The app, called Open Now, provides current information on the location and availability of healthcare centers, nutrition support, substance use support, daytime cooling centers, water fountains and hygiene amenities.

“This tool is a living, real-time resource that will continue to grow and improve with input from the community and feedback from users. Whether someone is in urgent need of a cooling center during extreme heat, a location offering safe drinking water, or access to other critical support services, Open Now is built to bridge the gap between people and the help they need—right when and where they need it,” David Gray, the City’s Homeless Strategy Officer, said in a press release…
