Knoxville City Council approves $2M to reduce flooding along N. Cherry Street

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A $2 million project has been approved to address frequent flash flooding along an East Knoxville street.

The Knoxville City Council on Tuesday approved a stormwater investment to upgrade North Cherry Street and reduce flooding that frequently causes closures. The project will be largely covered by federal grant funding with the city providing about $400,000 in local funds.

A rusted below-ground stormwater pipe made of corrugated metal allowed water to pool and cause flooding even during moderate rainfall, according to a city release. The project is expected to be completed in about a year…
