Afghanistan veteran returns to the Air Capital

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Joshua Tweet knew he was destined to serve back in high school and enlisted in the Army in 2009. After jumping headfirst into infantry training and airborne school, he soon found himself jumping out of something else.

“It’s the school where we jump out of airplanes,” he said with a laugh. “‘Perfectly good airplanes,’ is what everybody says,” he said.

Tweet was soon off to Afghanistan for his first tour. His unit worked with Afghanistan’s national army and national police, battling the Taliban. Tweet’s team also provided for the Afghan citizens and protected them from terrorists.

“Playground equipment, healthcare, hygiene, we helped stock their hospitals. So we would just do these peacekeeping missions to these small, tiny villages at the base of the Himalayas,” he said.

After a year in Afghanistan, Tweet returned to the United States and was sent to Fort Bliss in El Paso, where he trained to be part of a Stryker unit. And he also made a major decision: to extend his service so he could complete a second tour of Afghanistan…
