Gov. Kotek unveils plan to boost Oregon transportation funds with gas tax and fee hikes

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — With just 22 days until lawmakers return to Salem for a special session, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek put out her proposed plan to fund Oregon’s transportation system.

“In the weeks since the adjournment of the legislative session, my team and I have worked every day with legislators, local partners, and key stakeholders to zero in on a focused solution for the immediate crisis in our transportation system,” said Kotek in a press release. “I am confident that lawmakers will step up this month to avert these layoffs, and I appreciate their partnership in getting to the other side of this crisis.”

The plan includes a six-cent increase to the state’s gas tax. This would increase the statewide tax to $0.46 per gallon. With the federal and city tax included, Portlanders would pay an extra 74.4 cents per gallon for gas.

Under the proposal, base title fees would increase by $139 for all vehicles, raising the total base cost to $216. This does not include the fuel-efficiency surcharge, which fluctuates based on the type of vehicle…
