GPT-5 Arrives: OpenAI Unleashes Latest AI Powerhouse

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the highly anticipated successor to its widely popular ChatGPT model. CEO Sam Altman heralded the release as a “significant step” towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and a “major upgrade” from the previous version. He even confessed that returning to GPT-4 after experiencing GPT-5 was “miserable.”

This latest iteration promises a faster, more versatile experience. OpenAI emphasizes GPT-5’s multimodal capabilities and automatic model switching, eliminating the need for users to manually select different versions for varying tasks.

GPT-5 will be available in standard, mini, and nano versions, all free to use, with paid users enjoying higher usage limits. Speed is another key improvement, addressing a priority for Altman.

Adding a touch of Silicon Valley flair, GPT-5 boasts enhanced “vibe coding” capabilities. The release follows weeks of mounting excitement, fueled by Altman’s teasers on social media, including a recent post showcasing GPT-5’s ability to recommend thought-provoking AI-themed television shows.

Altman has previously made bold statements about GPT-5, claiming it surpasses human intelligence in most areas and likening its development to the Manhattan Project. He even expressed a sense of unease, referencing scientists questioning the implications of their creations.

Following the February release of GPT-4.5, which Altman described as the first model to resemble conversation with a thoughtful person, GPT-5’s launch faced several delays. Despite this, ChatGPT’s user base has continued to expand. OpenAI now projects it will reach 700 million weekly active users this week, up from 500 million in April.
