Route 240/250 Roundabout
The long-awaited roundabout project at the intersection of Routes 240 and 250 is finally underway, but officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) say that an expansion of the project’s parameters means it will take a bit longer than originally planned.
“We have completed the first phase of the project, which consisted of temporary pavement and traffic shifting along Route 240,” said William Stowe, VDOT area construction engineer for the Culpeper district, “and we have moved into our second phase that involves detouring Route 680.” Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike) is the northern spoke in the roundabout wheel, running alongside Fiesta Azteca restaurant. From the roundabout, the road almost immediately crosses Lickinghole Creek, and VDOT has determined that bridge needs to be replaced.
“After award of the contract, we added scope to the project by [planning to replace] the Route 680 bridge over Lickinghole Creek,” said Stowe. “This made sense due to the proximity of the bridge to the roundabout project, and will allow us to replace the bridge while only closing Route 680 once instead of coming back to do the bridge at a later date.”…
