Parents and educators divided over new law permitting non-certified teachers in classrooms

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — As schools welcome students back to the classroom, they could be greeted by an unfamiliar face, a non-certified teacher.

A new five-year pilot program, signed into law in May, allows districts to hire non-certified teachers with a bachelor’s degree and five years of work experience in their career field to enter the classroom without going through the traditional certification process.

State lawmakers see it as a way to fill the gap in the continuing teacher shortage, and some parents, including Jessica Day, said it could be a great opportunity…
