Newark PD says burglars posing as landscapers, utility workers

(KRON) — Newark police say they have received multiple calls of thieves posing as landscapers or utility workers who are targeting area homes by breaking in to commit burglaries after their door knocks go unanswered.

Newark PD said the suspects have been reported to wear high-visibility vests to dupe victims.

“In some cases, these suspects have been seen driving a moving company truck and are active at various times of the day,” said Newark police in a social media post.

Police are offering residents the following tips to remain vigilant:

  • Don’t open the door to strangers, but make sure they know someone is home by speaking through the door.
  • If you’re away, monitor your security cameras and check alerts promptly.
  • Lock all doors and windows, especially before leaving or going to bed.
  • Verify with the utility company if someone claims to be from them.
  • Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch group to strengthen safety and communication in your community.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to Newark PD.
