“Cuts with Cops” returns, helping students get ready for school, for free

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Roanoke County Police and Sheriff’s Department is giving back to the community by helping students get ready for school through its “Cuts with Cops” program. It’s free event with haircuts, vaccines, and school supplies.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 9th, at the Carilion Children’s Center at Tanglewood. It will be bustling with children’s activities, all to help families get ready for back to school. Hairstylists from three different salons will be there giving haircuts. As for the supplies, organizers say they’ve received over 700 backpacks filled with things needed for school. Fleet Feet has donated 600 shoes and pairs of socks, and Mission Barbecue is donating 600 meals as well.

“Things like haircuts, like school supplies, can be a financial burden on families, as well as a scheduling burden. So, having this available all in one place, I think, it’s really helpful to support the kids and help the family make that transition, making the start of school nice and easy,” Andrew Herman, the chair of pediatrics at Carilion Clinic, said.

The Virginia Department of Health will also be there, giving all the vaccines children need to start the school year. They recommend parents bring any medical records, so they know exactly which vaccines their children need…
