Northern California police say scammers are getting clever with new bank scam

According to the Rocklin Police Department, the new scam starts with a victim receiving a text, email, or call from someone posing as their bank. The sender inquires about fraudulent activity. After the victim confirms the fraud, they are transferred to a fake fraud or customer service department that will convince the person to allow access to a bank account.

“They eventually dupe you into transferring funds to another account via wire, gift cards, or a bitcoin ATM,” RPD said. “Or they may ask you to withdraw money from your bank and physically pick up the cash. The money is gone. Thousands of dollars, gone.”

RPD added, “the problem is, it was never your bank to begin with. It was a scammer. They’re getting clever. Using spoofed numbers to imitate banks or government entities. They’ll keep you on the phone during the process to instill a sense of urgency. They may tell you to lie to bank tellers about withdrawing money. They may tell you you’re under investigation, or maybe the bank teller is in on it. Lies. It’s all a scam.”…
