Diddy Aims to Counsel Abusers, Hoping to Avoid Prison

Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is hoping to avoid prison time for two prostitution-related convictions by dedicating himself to counseling other abusers, his lawyer told reporters. Combs was found guilty last month and faces up to 20 years in prison. He plans to request a sentence of time served.

Defense attorney Alexandra Shapiro stated that Combs actively wants to work with domestic violence programs, counseling youth and others to become an advocate against abuse. She believes Combs’ celebrity status could make him an effective spokesperson. The legal team will include these arguments in their sentencing appeal to the Manhattan judge overseeing the case.

Combs has been held in a Brooklyn jail for nearly a year, denied bail five times. While acquitted of more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges, the two Mann Act violations each carry a maximum 10-year sentence. However, legal experts anticipate a significantly shorter sentence.

Shapiro argues that the prosecution’s case was “overcharged and unfair.” She contends that the Mann Act is typically used against those profiting from the exploitation of vulnerable women, not customers like Combs. She emphasizes that the men involved were willing participants, not victims of exploitation.

Combs’ defense will highlight his efforts towards “redemption,” including addressing his drug addiction and seeking counseling for past domestic violence issues. They also plan to emphasize his potential for positive impact, given his accomplishments as a self-made businessman.

During the trial, Combs’ defense portrayed him as a complex individual with flaws, while several women, including ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, testified about his violent behavior. The jury also viewed a hotel surveillance video showing Combs kicking and dragging Ventura.

While Combs’ team has reportedly contacted the Trump administration regarding a potential pardon, recent indications suggest this is unlikely.
