Protesters gather outside Kern County CPS office

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A group of protesters gathered outside the Kern County Child Protective Services office on Friday following the death of 8-year-old Genesis Mata.

The protest took place outside the Kern County Department of Human Services building in Bakersfield, located at 100 California Ave. It began at around 10 a.m. and protesters are demanding an independent investigation into Kern County’s CPS.

Daisy Gomez, a family friend of Genesis’ family, told 17’s Justin White that Genesis’ death could have been prevented and that it seemed like CPS were “doing nothing.”

“I hope CPS gets investigated, I hope that they open up full investigation,” Gomez said. “Who was responsible of the case? Who was the supervisor of the case? Who was in charge of their case? Because they need to be investigated, and why didn’t they do anything?…
