Charlottesville begins planning for Downtown Mall’s 50th anniversary

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Big celebrations are coming up as the Charlottesville Downtown Mall is preparing for its 50th anniversary next year.

With there being very few pedestrian malls in the U.S., the Historic Resources Committee believes this anniversary is a good time to look back on its history.

“We’re hoping to have a lecture or two that talk about the creation of the mall, the architecture of the mall, and some of those more historic aspects rather than was we think of, which is food and drink and that kind of stuff,” said Olivia Brown, Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society Executive Officer. “So really bringing that history back to it.”…
