Man appears in court after People’s Park fire arrest

SPOKANE, Wash. – Richard Burt made his first court appearance on Friday, after being arrested in connection to a suspicious fire at People’s Park. Burt was detained after police observed a man, matching the suspect’s description, starting another fire in the same area.

The initial fire occurred on August 4, and just three days later, Burt was seen starting a second fire on a live drone feed. Police detained him on Thursday.

Firefighters responded to People’s Park shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday following calls about a grass fire near the parking lot. Multiple witnesses reported seeing a man enter the woods and then run to an orange car, driving off just minutes before the fire began in the same vicinity.
