‘Mama’s’ house to be demolished for rebuild, son says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The dilapidated South Memphis home owned by an 81-year-old woman who was sleeping outside in her car will be demolished to start rebuilding, her son said.

Antoine Hardin posted an update Saturday to the Gofundme page he set up for his mother to rebuild her home.

“The contractor is pulling the permit from the city of Memphis to start rebuild. Nothing is salvageable because the house is too dangerous to go in,” Hardin wrote. “There are a lot of memories in that home but I had to get Mama to understand that she can make more memories while she’s still living than trying to retrieve old memories and an accident might happen.”

Hardin said all appliances and furniture will be demolished with the building.

The story of Christine Marshall, known to neighbors as “Mama,” captured the hearts of Memphians after WREG reported on her situation last month.
