Man who threatened to copy Memphis spree shooter arrested for strangling woman, MPD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man on probation for threatening to copy the actions of Memphis spree shooter Ezekiel Kelly was put back behind bars for strangling a woman, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

MPD officers arrested 25-year-old Derrick White on Thursday. Investigators said that White choked a woman until she lost consciousness two days prior.

He was already serving three years of probation at the time of the alleged aggravated assault for comments he made on social media last year. In June 2024, officers charged White with Commission of Act of Terrorism after he hosted a Facebook Live and said, “I’m about to pull a Zeke.” Investigators said that the comment referenced the actions of Ezekiel Kelly, who’s accused of shooting six people, killing three, in 2022. People were seemingly targeted at random throughout the hours-long spree shooting, leading MPD to issue a shelter-in-place order for Memphis citizens…
