Two Suspects Charged with Homicide Following Fatal Fentanyl Overdose in Citrus Heights

Two suspects face homicide charges in the wake of a fentanyl overdose that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man in Citrus Heights last year. The Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) confirmed that Gabriela Valenzuela, 20, and Luis Romero-Espinoza, 22, were arrested on Tuesday, August 5, following a detailed investigation into the events leading up to the October 2024 tragedy. Authorities allege that the suspects provided the lethal substance.

Responding to a report of an unresponsive male on October 23, 2024, officers and Sacramento Metro Fire medical personnel found evidence at the scene consistent with a fentanyl overdose. According to a statement on the Citrus Heights Police Department’s website, it was determined during the comprehensive investigation that both Valenzuela and Romero-Espinoza “had full knowledge of the dangers associated with fentanyl” before the drug was sold to the victim. Officers made efforts to revive him, which ultimately proved unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
