ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A grand jury has indicted the young man accused in a deadly shooting on the University of New Mexico’s campus on eight charges, including second-degree murder. Police said a group of four teens was in a dorm room at Casas del Rio last month when 18-year-old John Fuentes opened fire, killing 14-year-old Michael LaMotte and injuring a 19-year-old. Police records say the group may have used LSD, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol.

Fuentes was found in Los Lunas after an hours-long manhunt. His attorneys called two witnesses in the case unreliable since they were intoxicated. The defense also claims the witnesses brought the guns to the dorm room that night. However, prosecutors convinced a judge to keep Fuentes behind bars until trial. If convicted, he faces up to 31.5 years behind bars.
