HOOSICK FALL, N.Y. (NEWS10) — After service veterans can sometimes suffer emotional and psychological challenges transitioning back into civilian life. Operation Stable Ground is a workshop that is offering equine-assisted retreats for veterans with a full-day experience focused on “Identity After Service.”
This event was hosted by the Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) Veterans Resource and Outreach Center (VETROC) at Higher Ground Farms. According to Stephen Onley, Director of Military and Veteran success at HVCC, one of the biggest struggles veterans face after service is realizing they aren’t still active duty.
“In their mind, they’re a service member, right. But their day to day doesn’t match up with that because they’re not serving anymore,” said Onley. “This disconnect can create more depression, isolation, anxiety, things like that.”
