A strange earthquake shook the Illinois/Indiana border late Friday night and was strong enough that it was felt by dozens as reports are still coming in.
While checking the USGS earthquake page today, I noticed a tremor in an area that does not typically see many earthquakes. It was an earthquake confirmed by the USGS right along the Illinois border with Indiana.
What caused this odd earthquake in the southeastern part of Illinois?
This 2.6 magnitude quake would most likely be caused by the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. While this is not a region that sees a large quantity of earthquakes, many don’t realize that this fault is capable of a major shaker in the 7 magnitude range similar to what the more-famous New Madrid Fault is capable of.
