The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Belle Isle Conservancy are calling on locals and visitors alike to voice their opinions on the future of Belle Isle Park. A public survey, which remains active through Labor Day, invites the community to weigh in on 11 proposed large-scale improvement projects that aim to enhance the experience at the Detroit park. From extending the beach to restoring the historic boathouse, each project offers a potential transformation of this urban oasis.
Expressing the intentions behind the survey, Tom Bissett, Urban District Supervisor for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division, emphasized the importance of public input. “We’re looking forward to hearing from people all across the city of Detroit and beyond about how we can make this treasured destination better for everyone,” he stated in an announcement published by Audacy. Joining hands with the historic police headquarters, community and volunteer spaces are also part of the ambitious plans awaiting public opinion.
According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the list of projects was compiled by the Strategic Development Plan Team, which took into account the evaluation of park buildings and spaces, public comments from a recent study, and staff insights. These proposed improvements include the creation of a park cafe, enhancing the Kids Row Playground, and reactivating the Remick Music Band Shell, among others.
