South Florida faces wet Sunday before return to typical summer pattern

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — A Flood Advisory has been issued for St. Lucie County, including Port St. Lucie and River Park, until 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen and an additional of 1 to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor street flooding.

Sunday Weather Outlook

South Florida is experiencing unsettled weather today due to a stationary surface boundary—a non-moving front that separates different air masses—draped across the peninsula. This setup, combined with abundant moisture in the atmosphere, is leading to widespread showers and thunderstorms.

Rain will begin over the Gulf waters and move inland across southwest Florida early in the morning, spreading eastward throughout the day. With precipitable water (PWAT) values between 2.3 and 2.5 inches, indicating a high amount of moisture available for rainfall, and light steering flow (weak winds that guide storm movement), there is a risk of isolated urban flooding, especially in areas that have already received over 4 inches of rain this weekend.

Monday and Beyond

Starting Monday, South Florida will return to its typical summertime pattern. A surface high (a region of high atmospheric pressure) will build in from the western Atlantic, lowering moisture to normal levels.
