ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Survivors of bone marrow and stem cell transplants reunited Sunday afternoon for the Wilmot Cancer Institute’s annual BMT Picnic. The tradition brings together patients, families, and staff, and has for more than a decade.
The event drew about 90 transplant recipients from across New York state, including Albany and Binghamton. Attendees ranged from those just a few months out from their transplants to one patient marking 35 years since their procedure.
“It allows all of our patients and our staff and their families and friends to get together, spend some time together and reconnect after they’ve gone through their bone marrow transplants or cellular therapies,” said Dr. Patrick Reagan, BMT director at Wilmot. “Our patients and family members really connect with our inpatient nursing staff and the staff that they follow with afterwards. This is a great chance to get together and see other people who’ve gone through the same experience.”…
