Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst chaplain is descendant of first U.S. Army chaplain

A visit to the Army Chaplain Museum in Columbia, South Carolina, unexpectedly revealed a remarkable family legacy for a chaplain currently serving at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey.

U.S. Air Force Chaplain (Col.) Jonathan Hurt, JB MDL senior chaplain, was taking a course several years ago at the Air Force Chaplain Corps College in Fort Jackson, South Carolina when he decided to visit the museum.

During the visit, he was surprised to discover that the first Army chaplain, John Hurt, bore almost the same name as him. He found it fascinating and wondered if they could be distantly related, but did not give it much further thought…
