Mobile plans to remove more than two dozen traffic signals from downtown intersections to improve traffic flow, with changes to begin Wednesday.
According to information provided by the city administration, the signals in question are on “low-volume intersections,” none of which are along major thoroughfares such as Government or Broad streets. Most are along Conti, St. Francis, St. Louis and Royal streets.
At most of the locations in question, the signals “will be replaced with four-way stops to improve traffic flow and increase pedestrian safety,” said a city announcement. “The project will also improve pedestrian safety and access by installing new ADA ramps and restriping crosswalks.”
The effort is expected to cost $1.1 million. All 26 affected lights will begin flashing red on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and will continue to do so through a 90-day transition period. Work will take place in stages and is expected to be completed next spring, according to the city announcement…
