$1.4 million judgment ruled against Maryland doctor for Medicare fraud

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A Maryland doctor has had a $1.4 million judgment ruled against him for fraudulent billing practices involving Medicare.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced the judgment of $1,407,493.23 against Dr. Richard Akoto and his practice, Richard O. Akoto, M.D. PC.

The U.S. District Court found that Dr. Akoto, a family medical practitioner in Takoma Park, Md. submitted false claims to Medicare by billing for auricular stimulation (P-Stim) devices as if they were implantable neurostimulator devices. The P-Stim device, used by Dr. Akoto to treat pain, provides electrical acupuncture and is applied externally, unlike the surgically implanted neurostimulator devices…
