U-M Spin-Out Company that Treats Tumors with Ultrasound Gets Backing From Bezos-Backed Group

ANN ARBOR, Aug. 11, 2025 ~ A spinout company of the University of Michigan that focuses on helping people with tumors had a majority of its shares recently purchased by a group of investors that includes billionaire Jeff Bezos.

HistoSonics is a company based in Plymouth that uses ultrasound waves to target tumors, which allows for treatment without invasive surgery. A consortium comprised of San Francisco-headquartered K5 Global, Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Expeditions and Boston-based Wellington Management purchased approximately two-thirds of the company, with K5 Global having also backed SpaceX and OpenAI, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
