Sneak peek: New Grand Rapids Fire Department station nears completion

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Fire Department is preparing to open a new station, its first since 1986.

Crews are putting the finishing touches on the Kendall Street Fire Station, located at the corner of Kendall Street and Kalamazoo Avenue. Despite the cold winter and humid summer, the project is on schedule, EV Construction Vice President of Project Development John Parker said in an email to News 8.

“We are very proud to partner with GRFD in bringing this new community resource to the neighborhood. This kind of project is much more than just a building and we are excited to be part of the team,” Parker wrote.

The station is built with resilient materials, GRFD Fire Chief Brad Brown told News 8. It includes private dorm rooms, a fitness center, a kitchen and a space out back where firefighters can grill and hang out in between calls.
