A 10-year tax break to fix up abandoned homes could provide more housing in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – On Tuesday, the Anchorage Assembly will consider an ordinance that would encourage owners of vacant and abandoned homes in Anchorage to turn them into places where people could live.

The measure, introduced as part of the Mayor’s 10,000 Homes in 10 Years strategy, would provide a 10-year property tax break for people who fix up homes to a livable standard.

Nolan Klouda, policy advisor for Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, said in order to qualify, the property must be listed on the city’s official list of vacant and abandoned buildings which currently has at least 180 residential properties, according to a release from the mayor’s office.
