Kalamazoo sees success with youth justice reforms, but serious crimes persist

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Nearly two years ago, a package of bills were signed into Michigan law to reform the youth justice system by providing more mental health resources, while creating programs to keep kids out of the system.

In 2025, youth crime is down compared to this time last year, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS). However, officials are concerned about the severity of the crimes happening.
