BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Public outrage against Kern County’s Child Protective Services has been growing after the tragic death of 8-year-old Genesis Mata shook the community, with a petition calling for an investigation into the department continuing to gain support.
The Change.org petition, named “Demand Independent Investigation into Kern County CPS,” has gained 1,055 signees as of Tuesday afternoon.
The petition started last week, days after Ray Mata Jr. and Graciela Bustamonte were arrested on suspicion of torturing and killing Genesis in a motel room over the course of two days. Mata was Genesis’ biological father while Bustamonte was her stepmother.
