City of Sanibel appoints first Chief Resilience Officer

Sanibel Island is renowned for its beautiful beaches and miles of walking and biking paths winding through some of the most beautiful natural habitats in Southwest Florida. These natural landscapes coexist sealessly with island homes, businesses and public spaces, embodying the city’s commitment to fostering an environment where the community can connect with nature. The City of Sanibel affirms this through its vision statement:

“Sanibel is and shall remain a barrier island sanctuary; one where a diverse, multi-generational community lives in harmony with the island’s wildlife, preserving natural habitats for the inspiration of future generations.” This foundational statement reflects the community’s shared values and guides decision-making.

Recognizing the island’s unique vulnerability to climate change, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events, the City of Sanibel has made Community Resiliency an important part of its strategic goals. As part of this effort, the City recently took a major step by appointing its first Chief Resilience Officer (CRO), a role focused on helping the community plan and prepare for current and future environmental challenges.
