Mary Rice talks role in ’17 killing spree along NW Florida-Alabama coast, claims innocence

OCALA, Fla. — For the first time since being convicted of first-degree murder in September 2018, Northwest Florida woman Mary Rice is speaking publicly about what she calls her road trip from hell with Billy Boyette.

Officials say Boyette killed four women — two in Milton, one in Lillian, Alabama, and another in Beulah — in early 2017. He later killed himself. A jury convicted Rice of being an accomplice to the murder spree.

Here’s a timeline of events:

  • Jan. 31, 2017 — Employees at Emerald Sands Inn in Milton find Alicia Greer and Jacqueline Moore shot dead
  • Jan. 31, 2017 — Rice says sometime after the double-murder she was kidnapped, threatened and forced to go with Boyette around the Northwest Florida and Alabama coasts
  • Feb. 3, 2017 — Officials find Peggy Broz shot to death in her Baldwin County driveway
  • Feb. 6, 2017 — Kayla Crocker shot in a home invasion in Beulah
  • Feb. 7, 2017 — Rice surrenders to law enforcement moments before Boyette kills himself inside a West Point, Georgia, motel room

After more than eight months corresponding with Rice and the Department of Corrections, the 45-year-old convicted murderer was made available for a 60-minute interview at the Lowell Annex state prison in Ocala where she’s being held for a life sentence. The only off-limit topic was her active Alabama case.
