Albuquerque health officials say to avoid raw shellfish due to increase in Vibrio infections nationwide

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Vibrio infections are on the rise in some coastal states, such as Florida and Louisiana. It’s a bacteria that primarily affects the gastrointestinal system, but can also affect the skin.

Vibrio is found in infected raw oysters, clams, scallops, shrimp, crab, lobster, and other shellfish. Restaurants have been advised not to serve any seafood raw for the time being. Monday, the City of Albuquerque sent out a notice to all 4,000 restaurants and grocery stores recommending they cook all their shellfish before serving it.

“We typically don’t see it very often because we’re landlocked,” City of Albuquerque Consumer Health Division Manager Francelli Lugo said. “However, we do receive some of that fresh seafood from other areas, and they are right now seeing a lot of Vibrio in their waters.”…
