Caledonia woman sentenced in ‘dark money’ scheme

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS/WOOD) — A Caledonia woman will do community service for providing a false statement during an investigation into a so-called “dark money” fundraising scheme to fund a petition initiative.

Sandra Baxter, 65, was sentenced in Ingham County Wednesday to 20 hours of community service and a fine of $2,500.

In May 2021, retired Michigan Chamber of Commerce officer Robert LaBrant filed a complaint with the Michigan Department of State’s office alleging a “dark money scheme” to use nonprofit Michigan! My Michigan! to fund the Unlock Michigan ballot campaign.

Baxter was a fundraising consultant who solicited funds for Michigan! My Michigan! She was initially charged with perjury in February 2024.
