Started in 2023, Black Girl Joy Day marked its third year on August 9th as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass opened the doors of the Getty House, her official residence, to welcome more than 100 middle and high school girls from across California for a vibrant, intentional “Day of Play” centered on joy, empowerment, healing, and community.
Hosted by the California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute in partnership with the Getty House Foundation, the day-long celebration transformed the mayoral residence into a dynamic space for recreation and self-expression. From Zumba and line dancing to hula hoop contests and double Dutch, the activity stations offered a mix of movement, creativity, and reflection.
Girls explored a tennis clinic, basketball clinic, and “Paint + Chat” art space, along with quieter corners like a reading nook and a strategic journaling station. The Affirmation + Positive Self-Talk Station, powered by GirlWell, encouraged attendees to speak life into themselves, while hands-on workshops such as flower crown creation, bracelet making, and mini mood boards sparked artistic expression.
