Muddy mess: Runoff raises wildlife and water quality concerns in Elberta

ELBERTA, Ala. (WPMI) — State regulators are investigating complaints about storm water runoff from a neighborhood currently being developed on County Road 20 in Baldwin County. An Elberta official and residents both say they complained to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management after heavy rainfall this week. Elberta residents say the runoff is destroying wildlife in tributaries that feed Wolf Bay. Aerial pictures taken Tuesday show a plume of muddy water flowing into Moccasin Bayou.

“I’m so mad,” said Paul Salzmann.

Salzmann’s family has owned land on the bayou since the 50’s. Angling is in their blood, but he says there’s no more fish here. Dolphins used to chase mullet into the bayou past his boat houses…
