Colorado teachers express concerns about affordable housing options

DENVER (KDVR) — Housing affordability has been a legislative priority in Colorado for several years now, as being able to afford to live here can feel unattainable.

A new study shows many teachers in the state feel that way. Some industries will cover housing for workers as an incentive; a new survey looks into whether teaching should join the list.

Alex Nelson is a teacher in Denver. After living and working in the Mile High City for more than a decade, he said housing has become a big problem for teacher retention.

“District officials and city officials need to start becoming more involved, too. That school boards and city councils need to be considering what they’re doing to ensure that teachers who are starting their careers and teachers who are already in place in their districts can afford to live there,” Nelson said. “Because we know teachers who are more connected to their community and communities that are more connected to their teachers are going to be more successful.”…
