Asheville City Schools’ summer meals program fed hundreds of families weekly

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville City Schools’ first-ever summer meals and resource series has proven successful. Every Wednesday throughout summer 2025, the district provided more than 200 meals for families in need.

The districts’ “Together We Thrive” events were a community effort. On top of hot meals, MANNA FoodBank sent more than 1,000 students home with food bags.

The program began after Hurricane Helene when the gym at William Randolph was converted into a resource center. Melissa Hedt with Asheville City Schools said when students returned to school through the spring, there was still a need for resources and food.
